Gayathri Raghuram: I want to be a lady Prabhudeva
Gayathri, daughter of Choreographer Raghuram- Girija created a sensation with her debut film Charlie Chaplin. In a song sequence she lifted her leg and placed it on Prabhu Deva’s shoulder and danced in abandon.
A lull set in after the debut film. With Parasuram doing well and Whistle scheduled to release in June end, Gayathri is doing the Meena’s role in the Telugu remake of Villian directed by Ravikumar opposite Dr Rajsekar. A closer look at Gayathri.

Are you slated as a glamorous heroine?
I prefer to play homely roles. In fact my first film in Telugu was Reppalalo Radha . In this film I play the role of a village girl who dreams of going abroad. My lover is a US returned guy who thinks that life in villages is better than abroad. This film gave me the first break as heroine and that too in a village girl role. Even the forthcoming films have me in homely roles. Except for songs the characters are non glamorous. My second film in Telugu is Bapubommaku Pellanta , a remake of Nandanam (Malayalam film), which is again a non-glamorous role. In fact Navya Nair the heroine in the Malayalam film got the State award. Director Raviraja Pinsetty has done a better job than the original. I am hopeful of getting a state award for this.
Even my other language films did not have me in glamour roles. In Kannada I did Manasellam Ninee with Nagendra Prasad and Nakashtra Kannu Ulla Rajakumaran directed by Rajsenan, both were films with scope to emote.

Do Brinda and Kala (aunts) advice you?
They teach me as to how to conduct oneself in front of the camera. Since my childhood I have been going around with my aunt or my father to the sets and so dancing is something that comes very naturally to me. Brinda choreographed me in Whistle .

Do you have any sensational song like ‘Chumma Chumma’ in your forthcoming films?
In Vikatan there is a dance with Ramji. I think this dance will be talked about. Talking about the Charlie Chaplin dance, one-day Rajni uncle called me and asked me to meet him. At the sets of Baba I met him. He asked me how I managed to lift my leg and place it on Prabhu Deva’s shoulder. Even when we were in Singapore for the star nite I was very much embarrassed when Rajni uncle demonstrated my dance in front of other artistes. My idol is Prabhu Deva. I want to be a lady Prabhu Deva. He always does something new in each film.

Why don’t you do a film which is totally dance oriented?
I will be doing it soon. It’s not every time a Salangai Oli is made.

Do you choreograph for your own songs?
It will take me two more years since the dancers union has put a stipulation of a five year service to turn choreographer.

Does Kamalji a close friend of your father advice you?
It’s Kamal uncle’s advice that I am following. He told me not to take up every film that came my way. He told me to choose roles, which were not just glamorous, but also has the potential to act. His advice was less number of films and do only quality ones.

Who is your favorite actress?

Madhuri Dixit and Kajol .Both of them showed that beauty alone is not enough but also the way we conduct ourselves in the industry is important.
