Interview with Karunas
Other Interviews

"I want to be one among the common men" - Karunas

A stage singer, Karunas entered films through Bala’s Nanda . Though he had initial struggles, Karunas could overcome all and today he is the busiest comedian in Tamil cinema. He has given dates for the next two years, which is uncommon for a comedy artiste. He talks about his career and future plans in an interview to the editor of Galatta.com

On owning a costliest car: I had suffered right from my young age. I worked part-time to pay my fees while studying. I had fascination for that car and today by God’s grace I am in a good position and bought that car. It was expensive when I bought it. It’s not even worth 4 lakhs if I want to resell now. Maintaining it is also a big problem. I have friends in abroad and I somehow manage to get spare parts.

On the influence of the character ‘ Lodukku Paandi’ in Nanda : Nanda was out and out director Bala sir’s film. As a director he knows what best he can take out of me. Today people call me Lodukku Paandi where ever I go. All the credit goes to Bala sir. It is his sucesss, I would say. But at the same time I am trying different kinds of roles and prove that I am a performer beyond comedian. All appreciated my role ‘Cycle Jackson’ in April Maadhathil and the one in Villain. I wrote four of the scenes in April Madhatthil. I suggest if the scene requires some improvisation and that too if the director listens. Otherwise I don’t want to pork my nose and get a bad name. I am a director’s artiste. Whatever he says I will do it in my own way without changing the character. Now I am doing a lot of homework for my films.

On the charges that he refuses to work with co comedians: This is absolutely wrong I have never said this. I am doing with Vadivel sir in Inidhu Inidhu Kaadhal Inidhu. There is no harm in two comedians doing in the same film. The unpleasant experiences in the film Thirumalai has made me rethink. I feel as comedian I also have some responsibilities. Now people expect a lot from me. I can’t come and act mechanically. So I hear the story and my part clearly before committing. What’s wrong in it? I want to give clean comedy as far as possible. I mostly avoid double meaning dialogues. I should be a supportive element to the hero and heroine who are the main characters in a film. I see that my role should to different from one film to another.

On writing his own scenes in films: Of course I have a team who work out my part in the films. We do a lot of discussion. If directors ask me a script I am prepared for that. In Bala also I had suggested two scenes.

On his ‘International film’: A New Jersey company has invited me to act in their international film. It’s not a commercial feature film. It is being done keeping awards in mind. I am happy that I am featured in that film.

On his album “Koothaadi Guys” : The idea of doing an album was nurturing me for a long time. Now the time has come. I have done an album based on the Tamil poetry Thirukkural called “Koothaadi Guys”. It will explore our culture and heritage. I am planning to bring it out sometimes in December end just before Newyear.

On his role Model: I don’t have a role model. But I want to earn a name like comedian Chandrababu. He is an amazing person. He used to sing, dance apart from acting. I also want to become like him. I am a singer. But dancing is bit difficult. I am learning and practicing dance to make myself perfect.

On his future releases: Currently I am doing 13 films. Bala’s ‘Pitha Magan’, ‘Thirumalai’ with Vijay, ‘Attagasam’ with Ajith, ‘JJ’ with Madhavan, ‘Success’ with Junor Sivaji, ‘New’ with S.J.Surya, ‘Iyarkai’ with Shaam, an untitled film with Linguswamy, ‘Unnai Saranadainthean’, ‘Anbe Un Vasam’ with Tamizhmani, and hero in Mahendran’s ‘Udhiradha Pookal’.
