Interview with Madhavan
Other Interviews

On improvisation in sets
I am a great example of a good director's actor. I do exactly what the direction says including improvisation if he wants me to do.

On dictating terms with Directors
It's absolutely true. I make sure that I know exactly what I am getting into and what I want is there on the sets for me. So I think I have the reputation of making the directors life miserable before the shooting starts. I take full responsibility for them. Because as far as I am concerned my films start and shoot and finish within two months. The cost of production should be under what it has been stated to the producer. Till date I can vehemently and very categorically state that I manage to accomplish all of the above, because in a panel of 3 years, I have given 15 films, which means 5 films in a year, which means on an average one film in two months. If a director or producer not adhere to there commitments I become very strict and make their life miserable, because I don't want my other producers pay for these peoples with that kind of an attitude. Before So I go for the shoot I have a meeting overnight. I think in the industry they start shooting the moment they get a stars date. I am not for it. It's a shock treatment for them. Unfortunately that's the way I work

On not encouraging fan clubs
I like do have fan clubs. It's a submissive kind of a fan club. I don't believe in calling them and giving money to promote my film. I have 12000 fan clubs all over TamilNadu. I have very clearly told then not to put my posters, pix in any corner of the city, not to keep huge cut-outs when my film is getting released. Despite that some people do. I don't think that helps my movie at all. What really matter is how I have performed and how good the story is. I ask them to go and see my films in the theatre so I don't run the risk of seeing them on VCD's. They watch my movies and come and tell me how I have performed. Till date my fan clubs have managed to conduct in a dignified manner. I don't believe in giving them money and put them into social activities. I am neither a leader. Nor a social worker. At this point of time I am only an actor. So I want them to treat me as an actor. If decide to get into social service organization and it will not be called Madhavan's fan club, it will be called something else. There is no pretence to my fan clubs or myself in terms of what we are trying to achieve.

On taking only minimal amount as advance
That's right. People like to commit. I tried to help the commitment as minimal as possible - 50 thousand or lakh. Simply because I think even if the producer is not ready with my schedule, a lakh of rupees is easy to return than 10 lakhs or so. Secondly I don't touch the money till the shooting of the film commences. I am in no commitment of fear because I have taken the money from have the freedom to walk out of a film if things are not proper

On Charity Shows
I feel happy that I am of little help to someone. Honestly speaking I am not doing much. Sometime it makes me and my wife to feel little less guilty of what all good thing s God has given us and in turn we show our gratitude in small ways and don't really talk about it because I have been lucky and lucky is not the word - Supremely lucky and you know how difficult it is to make it in the industry and retain it.

On Best Friends in the industry
Jo is our good family friend. As an acting fraternity as couples there are lot of friends. Ajith and Shalu, Shaam and his wife .My wife Saritha and I spend time with them unfortunately I am not a very social person. For me the whole day is a party and on top of it again to party in the late nights I am not keen. I like to spend whatever time I get with my family - my wife, mom and dad. Both Saritha and me likes to travel, we have friends in different parts of the world. Would like to go there play golf and do stuff like that. Unlike what people would like believing I am not thinking and doing films all the 24 hours. It's only the shooting time I make sure that I generate lot of my personal time, which includes playing golf, visiting my parents, spending time with my dogs, spending with family. That is as much important if not more to me than my career is. My career is just a means of me to achieve the kind of happiness I am yearning for. I definitely get more happiness being and spending quality time with my family than a good film.
