Vannathupoochi, produced by Mother Arts International, is directed written and directed by Azhagappan C., who has worked as an assistant with Kamal Haasan.
We caught up with the director at AVM studios where the final day's shoot was in progress. The director was confidence personified, likening his film to the recent Taare Zameen Par. A confident Azhagappan says that the film will create an everlasting impact like Aamir Khan's film.
Vannathupoochi stars Bala Singh, debutants Sree Lakshmi, Siddharth and Madhavi Sharma in the lead roles. Naren plays the role of a dumb person in an outstanding and unforgettable manner.
As to the story, Azhagappan says that the film raises the question whether parents are really helpful in a child’s growth and happiness and he also tries to explore answers. The filmmaker has tried to convey the message that parents should not force their thoughts and aspirations onto their children.
Talking about the commercial prospects of a children’s film, Azhagappan says that the film can be compared to the acclaimed Poove Poochoodava, which showed a wonderful relationship between a grandmother and her granddaughter. “In Vannathupoochi,” the director says, “I have dealt with a relationship between a grandfather and a granddaughter.”
“You can also compare my film to Taare Zameen Par, which entirely dealt with a little boy with special needs. My film is entirely about a little girl,” adds Azhagappan.
The film also has a technical crew that is top-notch. Cinematography is by P.S. Dharan, who has used only natural light while shooting the film outdoors. Music is composed by debutant Reyhan who has come up with 6 beautiful tunes. Lyrics have been written by Pazhanibharathi, Pa. Vijay, Snehan and newcomer Thendral. The director has also penned the lyrics for a song.
Azhagappan reserves his biggest compliment for actress Revathy who makes a guest appearance as a judge in the film. Having worked with the actress in Thevar Magan and Magalir Mattum, the director has a great working relationship with her. Revathy was very much impressed by the story that she acted in the film for free, says a grateful Azhagappan.
