In Anthony Yaar, Shaam laments the death of a whale washed ashore in a scene that is moving and very realistic. Reason: The dead whale was real and Shaam’s tears too!
Anthony Yaar, an action film directed by C.D. Pandi featuring action hero Shaam as a fisherman, portrays the lives of fisherfolk. Shooting for this film has been going on with full vigour at the seaside village of Uvari, famous for its St. Anthony's Church that is claimed to have miraculous powers; the shrine at the church was sculpted in the 18th century by Portuguese sailors who settled down here. They believed it cured them off the epidemic disease they had contracted after they landed here.
Recently, a 12-feet dead baby whale, which apparently died of injuries, was washed ashore nearby Anthony Yaar’s shooting spot. When C.D. Pandian and his film crew came to know about this, they paid a visit to the spot. After feeling sorry for the whale, they decided to give it a memorable sendoff in their film. They decided to film a scene depicting Shaam lamenting the whale’s death as it was being cleared by the fisherfolk. Shaam did not use glycerine to evoke tears in this scene and gave a spontaneous and moving performance as he was already touched by the whale’s sad ending. Then crew gave a respectful sendoff to the leviathan as the fisherfolk towed it away.
