The song ‘Adiye Kolludhe’ from Vaaranam Aayiram is perhaps the first Tamil song that has made it to Channel [V]. Played on the programme Zabardast Hits four times daily, it is indeed a big recognition for a Tamil film; Channel [V], which could not look beyond a few funny(?) aspects of South has begun to take notice of its talent and sheen and has felt the urge to let others know about it! Well, thank you, Channel [V].
Channel [V] is monopolized by Bollywood songs/ music albums and some international chartbusters; songs from regional movies – especially from the South which makes top-class films that get recognized by Cannes and many other great film festivals – are not given their due respect. This happened despite the success of southern music directors like A.R.Rahman in Bollywood. If there was any mention of things Southern, it was primarily for a few laughs. Well, that is how Quick Gun Murugun was born! But now Quick Gun Murugun has become a cult figure and so has Channel [V]’s Lola Kutty.
The scenario has changed with Vaaranam Aayiram’s ‘Adiye Kolludhe’ breaking the jinx of “no southern songs on [V]”. Vaaranam Aayiram stars Suriya, Sameera Reddy, Divya Spandana and Simran. Harris Jayaraj has composed its music. Sony BMG owns the audio rights of Vaaranam Aayiram.
Trivia: 'Adiye Kolludhe' was sung by Kamal Haasan’s daughter Shruthi (male voice: Krish) and it was released by Rajinikanth’s daughter Soundarya!
