Is Kamal Haasan an idealist? Let's take, for example, Kamal's recent release Dasavathaaram apart from many of his most-discussed movies like Unnaal Mudiyum Thambi and Anbe Sivam.
Dasavathaaram has a strong ideology to present, which is probably difficult for laymen to understand. Its concept (Chaos Theory) that even a disaster has a reason to occur, i.e. to save the Earth and mankind, either through Nature or man-made calamities requires a lot of explanations which may consequently evoke a tough debate between Philosophy, Religion, Science and History.
Just imagine if Kamal had not enacted 10 roles in Dasavathaaram! Even then, the movie would have become a huge hit for its ideology by the author! In fact, the film has become a hot topic for discussions.
Talking about his idea of “design of nature” (or 'Law of Karma') which restores order through tsunami in the chaotic nature and re-unites soul-mates in Dasavathaaram, he said that nature could have chosen a wiser option to end the bio-menace, instead of being so cruel. Re-uniting soul-mates after making them go through tough times and death of an idealistic activist is part of its crude design.
"It is very difficult for an idealist to survive in this selfish world until he develops a strong instinct to live,” Kamal Haasan revealed his experience. “Personally, I suffered being an idealist but I am alive because of my daunting spirit. It is difficult but not impossible. Even Jesus was crucified before his thoughts were clearly understood.”
For a peaceful world, Kamal Haasan’s ideology gels with philosopher Emmanuel Kant's words - “Extract maximum pleasure from the earth with minimum pain to it and its inhabitants." Kamal further clarified that even our epics had pragmatic thoughts but interpreters twisted them, serving us 'bottled juice', not fresh juice.
Kamal Haasan is currently working on his next project Marmayogi, a 7th century period epic. Marmayogi is a big-budget entertainer which is expected to be another feast for all sections of the audience like Dasavathaaram. It will go on floors from August.
