The first scene itself is a proof to the film's majesty. But you have to see it to believe it. Ardent Vaishnavite Nambi, American President George Bush, schizophrenic old woman, Japanese martial arts teacher, Punjabi ghazal singer, young Dalit who fights for justice, American youth armed with dangerous weaponry, eight-footer, innocent Muslim, scientist, CBI official Bhoovaraghan whose Tamil has a funny twang – it is Kamal, Kamal and only Kamal who fills frame after exquisite frame in Dasavathaaram.
Kamal's extraordinary talent in establishing each of these characters, director K.S. Ravikumar's smart execution to blend all these characters into the narrative, strong storyline, Ravi Varman's cinematography (palatial houses and temples with architectural excellence. Wow!) , Devi Sri Prasad's background score, Thanikachalam's editing, all combine to transport us to a different world altogether.
Asin is the coy Brahmin girl who falls in love with the rebellious Nambi. Through her stunningly realistic performance, in many places, her acting is at par with the great Ulaga Nayagan. Mallika Sherawat handles the glam department. Her cameo too is of ample significance in the movie. Himesh Reshamiyya lures Tamil hearts through 'Mukunda' and 'Ulaganayagane'.
Dasavathaaram's strong point is its technical brilliance. But throughout the length of the film, the intense narrative, the suspense and variety in Kamal's characters engross viewers thoroughly and leave no room for suppositions. Now, with the stage perfectly set, will Dasavathaaram attract mega audiences to make it a runaway hit? Curious spectators who have booked for the first day show in advance, the movie industry and the whole world are holding their breaths to watch the opulence of Dasavathaaram and the rise of the Ulaga Nayagan. Certainly, it is a crucial moment, but memorable too; the juggernaut is set to roll.
