The election to elect the chief of the directors’ guild turned out to be an ugly event with violent pandemonium. Directors Bharathi Raja, K. Balachander, and R.C. Sakthi expressed their shock over the violent turn that events took yesterday.
There had been a difference of opinion between the factions of directors and assistant directors. But it is not still clear if this has led to the violent events here on Sunday.
Director Bharathi Raja has registered a complaint with Virugambakkam police station that some directors, including R.K. Selvamani, have been verbally assaulted and almost roughed up by a gang that was totally unrelated to the directors’ union. Next, he registered a complaint with the Election Commissioner. After this, Anand Mohan, the Election Commissioner postponed the election indefinitely. Following this, an immediate meeting of directors of Tamil films was arranged by directors K. Balachander and Bharathi Raja, the agenda of which was not disclosed. The meeting took place amidst tight police security in Vadapalani.
Director Bharathi Raja then spoke to reporters, saying severe action should be taken against the perpetrators of this violence. He said that directors treat assistant directors like their own brothers. He also added that some “black sheep” have got into the group and are behaving in an unacceptable manner. He said that if this situation is not checked at the earliest, it would snowball into something like the mafia interference in Bollywood.
