February has always been the time for the release of small and medium budget films in Kollywood. It is the time when the big-budget Pongal releases start losing their steam, making way for smaller films. Two of last year’s most acclaimed films, Mozhi and Paruthiveeran, were February releases.
Sadly this year, not many films have managed to make an impression, barring Mysskin’s Anjathey, a bold and fresh gangster flick. However, things look rosy now with four films lined up for release this weekend. One notable aspect is that all four films have varied subjects that do raise our expectations.
The biggie among the lot is Thotta, starring Jeevan and Priyamani. After Thiruttu Payale, Jeevan has been considered a safe bet by distributors. Priyamani too has turned into a marketable star with her last two releases (Paruthiveeran and Malaikottai) doing good business at the box office. Directed by Selva, the film is expected to be a commercial pot-boiler that will bring in the crowds.
For those who look forward to offbeat ventures, Sila Nerangalil is the one to watch out for. The film, noted Malayalam director Jayaraj’s first attempt in Tamil, is touted to be a musical thriller. The promos, showing the lead cast of Vincent Ashokan, Navya Nair and Vineeth in retro get-ups, have already caught the attention of moviegoers.
This Friday will also see Sathyaraj teaming up with Uday Kiran in Vambusandai which promises to be an entertainer for all ages in typical Sathyaraj style. Also out on Friday is Ponmagal Vandhal with a fresh cast that might turn out to be a dark horse.
After a not-so-great start to 2008, one hopes that these four films will reverse Kollywood’s lean show at the box office. Come this Friday, we will know which film will corner box office glory.
