There seems to be a new trend that has caught the fancy of many a Kollywood filmmaker. Earlier, films used to have a hero and heroine who danced, cried, laughed and, not to forget, fell in love and carried the whole film on their shoulders.
But, today, the trend has changed, as quite a few films are being made with half a dozen heroines in their cast.
It all started with director Selva’s remake of KB’s Naan Avanillai, with Jeevan in the lead and five popular heroines - Sneha, Namitha, Malavika, Keerthi Chawla and Jyothirmayi - romancing the hero. The film turned out to be a hit and apparently set the trend of multi-heroine films.
Currently, two more directors are making films with five or more heroines. One is Moser Baer's Raman Thaediya Seethai, with Cheran as its lead and Pasupathy and Nitin Sathya of Chennai 600028 fame in noteworthy roles.
Jagannath'a untiutled film has five leading ladies. While Vimala Raman, Ramya Nambisan and Karthika of Thoothukudi fame have signed up, the hunt is on for the remaining two roles.
The other film being made with multiple heroines is Peraanmai, directed by Jananathan, who has earlier directed the acclaimed Iyarkai and E.
For his third venture, Jananathan has signed up Jeyam Ravi as the hero. But for the heroines, he has gone a step beyond the other two films. Yes, this film will have eight heroines. What’s more, the director is going to cast eight new faces.
While films starring a bunch of popular heroes are quite normal in Bollywood, it seems Kollywood is about to jump on to the multi-starrer bandwagon. Let’s hope the directors don’t get carried away by the trend alone and support their move with scripts that justify their casting.
