Karan, one of the busiest heroes of Kollywood, has signed yet another film, but the interesting part of the news is that Karan will play a eunuch in this film, which is a very bold decision. In an image-conscious industry, Karan’s decision is incredibly surprising and it lets everyone know how serious he takes his acting career; Karan has donned myriad roles throughout his career, including that of a college student, romantic hero, innocent villager, illicit liquor brewer, etc.
Sources say Karan will enact this role in his forthcoming film, Ardhanari, to be directed by Nanda, who directed Oru Kallooriyin Kadhai. Nanda was full of praise for Karan who accepted this role readily. He was surprised by the actor’s commitment levels.
Karan commented that he has a desire to play all types of roles by the end of his career and he feels that as an actor, he has a commitment to don different types of roles without being concerned with the stigma associated, if any. He feels that this role gives him ample opportunity to showcase his acting skills. He also added that today, society and Tamil Cinema have started giving transgender people the respect due to them. The cinema, which earlier ridiculed them, is now showing them in good light and is not making their biological aberration a point of ridicule anymore; instead, it is recognizing them as the third gender and a part of society. Karan says he wanted to be a part of this noble act, as Ardhanaari shows the third gender in good light and will strive to change the society’s perspective about them.
So far, no leading hero has donned the role of a eunuch. Prakashraj, the supreme character artist of Kollywood, surprised everyone by donning the role of a transgender in Appu and so did Livingstone in one of his films, but both roles had negative shades. Ajith did the role of a man with womanish mannerisms (but not a transgender) in Varalaru.
In Bollywood, character artist Nirmal Pandey acted as a cross-dressing male in Dayra. And in the Bollywood remake of Sivaji starrer Navrathri, one of the 9 roles donned by Sanjeev Kumar had feminine mannerisms.
It is indeed a bold decision for Karan, a leading hero of Kollywood, to play a transgender on screen.
Galatta.com salutes bold Karan, who treats film roles as roles and is not bogged down by any stigma associated with them.
