Saami’s Mirugam has not exactly raked in rave reviews, but the crudity of the movie has indeed made news. The theme may have with the stated aim of creating awareness on AIDS, but the sexual overtones in the movie have taken the script in a completely wrong direction. When one walks out of the theatre, it is the lewdness that remains like a bad taste in one's mind. The director is however very confident that the movie will do famously with the audience and probably even the ban enforced on him due to his ‘slapping incident’ will be revoked!
Mirugam, which released alongside Billa, hardly matched the latter in reception. The two movies are poles apart in every possible way. Given that the movie had a poor response, especially from the women section of the audience, Samy arranged for special screening of the movie on 22nd December. Women in Chennai could watch the movie free at select theatres.
According to Saami, women need to watch the movie because it deals with an insatiable husband who ends up with AIDS, and he believes that only the wife can make a change. However, the portrayal of the male lead and the manner in which the scene is presented are not exactly concepts our women are comfortable watching on the silver screen, so how far his appeal will go, remains to be seen.
