Remakes seem to be the current trend prevailing in Kollywood.
Remake of old songs, themes and names, entire Kollywood is obsessed to do this. Some movies like Pollaadhavan with Dhanush in the lead, Namnaadu with Sarathkumar, Naan Avanillai with Jeevan have just used the names of the oldies. There are more in the making, like Malaiyur Mambattiyaan, the greatest hit of the eighties that initiated a fresh trend in Kollywood and Moonru Mugam in which Superstar Rajinikanth appeared in three different roles. The new versions of these films have opted to modify the blockbuster theme to suit today's trends. The remake of Malaiyur Mambattiyaan is handled by Thiagarajan, who played the lead role in the old version with his son Prashanth in the lead. Remake rights of Moonru Mugam is purchased by Kadhiresan, who produced Pollaadhavan.
Can we take this trend as a wave of nostalgia, or is there a shortage of storylines in Kollywood?
