Once upon a time, a film called Muthu, starring Indian superstar Rajinikanth, was sub-titled in Japanese as The Dancing Maharaja and released in Japan. Since then Rajni’s fame has spread to the Far East; each and every movie of his is awaited with bated breath, much like Indian fans of Jackie Chan going berserk when his movies release here.
To honour his Japanese friends, Rajni is flying to Japan for the Tokyo International Film Festival to be held in October. Though Rajni was not willing to go the Film Festival due to date problems, we now learn that he has decided to please his Japanese fans and show up at the Tokyo International Film Festival.
Even though Rajni is a seasoned globetrotter, he has yet to set his foot in the Land of the Rising Sun. It’s safe to assume that Rajinikanth is the only Indian superstar to have a massive fan following in South East Asia, Fast East and China with over a thousand fan clubs.
Rajni’s movies, religiously subtitled in Japanese and Chinese, are stocked in almost every movie DVD store. The Japanese title for Rajni translates to ‘Emperor of Dance’.
Kuselan will be screened at the Tokyo International Film Festival.
