Girls who are not junior artists but appear in Tamil films as ultra-modern urban girls in short scenes are referred to as “rich girls”. They occupy screen space as the heroine’s friends, or as pedestrians, or as busy shoppers, or they simply walk in the background while the focus is on the main characters. These cameo artists mostly do it as a hobby or for pocket money. They come from different streams of life, but most of them are from middle class families. Yet they are called as “rich girls”, irrespective of their monetary status. The newly added term – rich-girls – has become synonymous with non-film people who do cameos in films as a hobby, or for fun, or for pocket money.
You will see quite a lot of "rich girls" in the upcoming film Chennaiyil oru mazhaikkalam.
But the surprising part is that young boys who do the same are not referred to as “rich boys”!
