Sangitha (also spelt as Sangeetha), known for her histrionic talents as well as her onscreen oomph, wowed everyone with her obsessed sister-in-law act in Uyir. Though the concept didn’t go down well with Tamil audiences, Sangeetha was noticed for her right and sensitive portrayal of a character that could have slid into sleaziness in less skilled hands.
Now, we hear even more amazing stories about Sangitha. Her latest movie Dhanam, as we all know, is about a very controversial subject which most heroines wouldn’t touch in a million years, fearing for their ‘image’. But Sangitha has accepted the challenge and is very professional in her portrayal of this hard-to-define character of a devadasi who lives on the fringes of society.
During the shoot, she impresses everyone with her grit to go through certain embarrassing scenes. Sangitha, onlookers said, was very uncomfortable doing certain scenes, but went through them as she understood their importance to the story. She overcame her discomfort and helped the crew finish filming on time.
The producer, Siva, sensitive to his lead artiste’s predicament, had screens erected around the sets and made sure that the sets were 'off limits' to fans and idle spectators while such scenes were being filmed.
Her other film, Indrajit opposite Sai Kumar directed by Guna Nagendra Prasad, has a very military setting, with a lot of patriotic feeling.
About her absence from films, she says, “I consciously stayed away from films for want of good roles.”
When director Nagendra Prasad approached her, her initial hesitation dissipated when she read the script. She is quoted as saying, “I liked the role. I felt it's a good movie to make a comeback with. It gives me scope to perform well; as an actor, that’s what I am looking for rather than doing meaningless films,” she says.
Kudos to the shy Sangitha, who’s so bold on screen.
