In Uyir, Sangitha (also spelt as Sangeetha) played a woman wooing her husband’s brother, while in Pithamagan, she was the beautiful, brash, yet lovable petty drug dealer. Now she plays a prostitute in the upcoming Dhanam. Naturally, people may ask: Why is she selecting only controversial roles in Tamil? Are these attempts to win awards or to earning quick fame? Sangitha has a solid answer to all these queries!
In fact, Sangitha says her original decision was not to act in Uyir. Knowing of her decision to decline this role, her psychologist friend mailed her to take up the challenge to educate society, in which 70% of families are undergoing unimaginable problems in relationships. So she was convinced, accepted teh role, and the rest is history.
"I am a person who truly respects relationships. Although my role was negative, the role had nothing to justify why the character behaved in this manner. It was only after much deliberation that I accepted the film,” she said.
She recalled that she accepted Pithamagan because she wanted to work with a director like Bala. “Pithamagan was a learning experience and I do not select a role thinking that it will get me an award. After every film, my confidence level is growing,” she said.
Talking about her ravishingly glamorous look in Dhanam, she denied that her role is little more than a skin show. "I am not comfortable in exposing skin. Once you see the film, you will understand that I have displayed glamour through body language, make-up, bright costumes and mannerisms," she explained.
Director G. Siva also has a clear-cut vision about his movie, Dhanam. "Devadasis (sex workers) are generally portrayed in a bad light. I have taken a conscious decision to show the other facet of those condemned by society," he said.
