Sarithiram is a film about the life history of traditional martial art by Silambam’s followers in southern parts of Tamil Nadu. About a few decades ago, Silambam was widely practised and was considered as a part of male identity in Tamil Nadu. Slowly, this art began fading, and now, it is on the verge of extinction. This film is a tribute to all those Silambam aficionados and teachers who are keeping it alive. This film will remind the viewers of this aspect of Tamil culture that is fast fading away into oblivion.
Sarithiram is directed by famous director Saami who directed super hit films like Mirugam and Uyir. The film casts Raj Kiran as a Silambam teacher and Mirugam Aadhi as his student.
Today, the film’s launch was announced after a pooja. The first phase of the filming will begin on June 15, 2008 in the land where Silambam was born – the Podhigai Hills. Following this, the second phase of the shooting will take place in Tirunelveli, Kanyakumari, Nagarkoil, and Salakkudi. There are some scenes which will be shot in Himachal Pradesh and Dhaka, the capital of Bangladesh.
The heroine of this film has not yet been decided. S.N. Raja is producing this film under the banner of I.D.A. Films. He had produced hit films such as Acharya and Rameshwaram.
