Many are released, but very few survive! This is what exactly happens to all Tamil movies released in Kerala. After the success of Vijay starrer Pokkiri (2007), which ran for 100 days in all lead centres in the state, now it's the turn of latest Kollywood film Subramaniapuram (also spelt as Subramaniyapuram), Sasikumar's directorial debut, which has recently celebrated 100 days in Tamil Nadu theatres.
Subramaniapuram has already completed 75 days in select theatres and is heading towards a definite century in Kerala. Reports said that the film has collected around Rs. 20 lakhs from a major centre at the capital itself. In fact, Subramaniapuram was released in the state three weeks after its release in Kollywood.
In Kollywood, Subramaniapuram has been running to packed houses ever since it was released in July 2008. Initially, it was released in a small number of theatres, but seeing the positive response, distributors and theatre-owners alike decided to bring in more prints and squeeze in more shows.
Set in small-town Madurai of the early 1980s, the film stars Jai of Chennai 600028 fame and director Sasikumar himself in prominent roles. Actress Swathi, who earlier played the sister in the Telugu version of Yaradi Nee Mohini, made her debut in Tamil films with Subramaniapuram.
