The evening of 5th July was memorable as the Tamil Music Awards unfolded at the Nehru Stadium. A host of glitterati were seen at the function which featured such innovative and meaningful categories as Best Rising Star and the Best Song with a Social Message.
The old time greats, the legends who shaped Tamil cinema music like M.S. Viswanathan, Ramamurthy and Vikku Vinayakram, were honoured for their contributions and timeless work. The routine business of handing out awards was interspersed with breathtaking sizzling dances by Meghna Naidu, Snigdha and Simran which had the audiences on their feet and rocking to the beat.
Some of the award-winners were:
Best Remix award – 'Engeym Eppodhum' in Pollaadhavan; Best Rising Star (Male) –Benny for his rendition of 'Maduraikku Pogathai' from Azhagiya Tamil Magan; Best Rising Star (Female) – Sweta Mohan for her rendition of 'Vizhiyil' from Kireedam and Best Melody Singer – Balram for his rendition of 'Katrin Mozhi' from Mozhi.
Nayantara, fashionably late, drove the crowds wild and was seen chatting to Khushbu. Shruti Haasan gave a great performance with ‘Kasu Mela...’ (Kaadhala Kaadhala) and ‘Yaar Yaar Sivam...’ (Anbe Sivam), from her father’s hit films.
On the whole, it was very successful as a glitzy, glamorous musical event and also showcased the talents who bring audiences some of the most beautiful music.
