The US Consulate appears to have taken strict measures to prevent smuggling of persons by some film actors. Such illegal activities came to light when the authorities arrested actress Flora, who has acted in films like Gajendra, Kusthi and Sorry, Enaku Kalyanam Aayidichu.
Flora was arrested on Tuesday after US Consulate authorities found that she had given false details regarding her companion to take her to the US. Consulate authorities have now handed over to the Police Commissioner a list of actors and actresses who they suspect have smuggled persons to the US.
These people approached the consulate to obtain visas to the US citing shooting, cultural tours, stage shows as the reason. They also requested visas for their companions listed as managers, assistants or make-up persons.
Around 200 names are said to be in the list which has artistes from Tamil, Telugu, Kannada and Malayalam film industry. While the list predominantly has artistes from Andhra, it is also said that the names of 10 Tamil artistes figure on the list.
A popular comedian from Tamil films is said to be in the list. It is learnt that the comedian has taken a companion with him every time he has gone to the US. However, he has returned home alone. It is suspected that such 'companions' have illegally stayed back in the US or have moved to Canada for employment.
Given the graveness of the issue, the Commissioner is said to have decided to make enquiries on persons in the list personally.
