Varnam is a film directed by S.M. Raju, a software engineer who was in the US for 18 years. But he found that cinema was his calling where he could explore his creative energy in a better way. So he decided to join Kollywood as a director. He got a chance to join Santosh Sivan as an executive producer and he grabbed it.
Varnam is produced by Alka Films Corporation, their second picture. The press meet for this film took place today. It was a very hospitable event and served as a good curtain-raiser to the film.
This film, which marks the debut of many newcomers, brings out the debilitating effects of caste system as well as the harsh realities of life, especially the realization that all childhood ambitions cannot be fulfilled.
This film’s cinematographer is Prem Kumar and music director is Isaac Thomas Kodukapalli.
Since the film has rural connections, director S.M. Raju decided that protagonist should be from a village. Many rural areas were searched and finally, Giri from Sinnalapatti village of Dindigul was selected as the hero. The movie also has Ashwata, a newcomer, Monica, and Sampath.
Shooting was in Dindigul and its surrounding areas, Kodaikannal and Theni. The film has some realistic scenes. A real temple’s thiruvizha (festival) has been shot and will be used for thiruvizha scenes of this film. The film will also be remembered for some remarkable feats like a 3-minute song being completed in one single take.
The film brings out its message on caste system without compromising on the commercial aspects of Kollywood cinema.
