With Bollywood stars taking a fascination to cricket, thanks to the Indian Premier League (IPL), stars from the South too are making a big splash on the cricket scene.
The Chennai team of IPL has signed leading Kollywood stars Vijay and Nayantara as brand ambassadors, it was announced yesterday. Vijay, who is the king of box office, and Nayan, the queen of Kollywood, will cheer for the Chennai Super Kings in all the matches the team plays. The two will also appear in ads promoting the team on television and hoardings.
At a grand function yesterday, Vijay announced that he had made the move as he was an ardent fan of cricket. The actor has a special liking for batting maestro Sachin Tendulkar and had earlier named his film (Sachin) after the legend’s name. “It is a delight to be part of the Chennai team and I hope ‘namma’ team rocks.”
The Chennai Super Kings are led by Indian ODI team captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni. The team is owned by A.C. Muthaiah’s India Cements. Ex-cricketer Krishnamachari Srikanth is also an ambassador for the team. Nayantara could not turn up for the function. It is rumoured that a huge amount has been paid to the two stars as endorsement fees.
