The latest trend among film directors and producers is that they are using new age media, especially blogs and networking sites like Facebook and YouTube, as a platform to promote their films, knowing that the Internet is a good way to self-praise and increased reach! Reports say that many film directors put their films and trailers on blogs and networking sites as a part of promotional activities, by which they can entice people to watch their films in theatres.
Following this trend, director Arun, a new director in Kollywood, has started a blog for his upcoming movie Achchamundu! Achchamundu! The blog has regular updates from the director, who is keen on sharing his experiences with like-minded filmmakers so that they too can learn certain aspects of filmmaking that are brought out during this production.
Along with this blog, the director is also constantly uploading his production videos, so that viewers can now get a glimpse of what happens on the production front in making the film format. In fact, Achchamundu! Achchamundu! becomes the first Tamil film which can boast of its own director's blog.
Meanwhile, Bollywood actress Tejaswini Kolhapuri, who was a part of a short film titled Salt and Pepper, says she also used the Internet to promote her movie. “I think websites are a new medium for budding filmmakers to promote their films initially. Salt and Pepper was showcased at the Cannes Film Festival this year and it is available for viewing on YouTube as well,” she added.
But the drawback is that these websites deal with small audiences. Even if someone posts a film online, it could go unnoticed, since people are still unaware of the possibility of Internet as a medium of broadcast, a film maker commented.
In a sense, these promotional activities through blogs and networking sites are helpful because people respond and give feedbacks. And it is satisfactory at a personal level as well, since you get a quick person-to-person message of the impact of the film. The medium may not be commercially viable, but it is emotionally viable!
