The first Women’s Film Festival is to be held in Chennai from March 1 to March 8. It is to be noted that March 8 is the International Women’s Day.
The film festival is organised by the InKo Centre, Chennai in association with the Women's International Film Festival, Seoul, the National Film Development Corporation (NFDC) India, the National Film Archives India (NFAI), the Directorate of Film Festivals of India (DFFI) and Sathyam Cinemas.
The Women's Film Festival will focus on a strong Korean and Indian section of feature films by women directors, as well as a section on World Cinema with films from Germany, France, Czechoslovakia, Hungary, Italy, Mexico, Iran, Canada, USA, Austria, Norway and Burkina Faso. The 3 Tamil films to be screened during the festival are Suhasini Maniratnam’s Indira, Sharada Ramanathan's National Award winning Shringaram and Janaki Viswanathan’s Kanavu Meipada Vendum.
With variety and range, this Festival promises a rich haul of films. Opening with Chitra Palekar's Maati Maay, a total of 84 films over 7 days are to be screened across 3 screens - two at Sathyam Cinemas and one at the South India Film Chamber.
On 8th March, to coincide with International Women's Day, there will be a seminar titled Looking through the Lens: A Woman's Point of View to critically examine from the point of view of practice, critique, teaching and development, this oft-debated question of what constitutes "a woman's film".
The ticket for seeing the films are priced at Rs. 200 for the general public while they are given at a discount of Rs. 150 for Film Chamber members and Rs. 100 for students. Tickets can be obtained at the ticket counters of Sathyam Cinemas.
