Why exactly did the Government come with the tax exemption rule for Tamil movies with Tamil titles? With all the mayhem and objections raised in view of the titles Ayan and Aegan, one tends to forget how it all began. Well the rule came into enforcement with the hope to encourage our Kollywood directors to give Tamil titles to their movie as opposed to ones in English, which was becoming a fast catching trend. Since then every movie that has released have used only Tamil names.
When movies named Ee and Akku released nobody had any issues. But now everyone seems to be quite taken up with the names Ayan and Aegan, which have been proven by scholars to be Tamil words that refer to the Gods Brahma and Siva, respectively. However, there is one set of people who claim that since these words have their roots in Sanskrit, these cannot be accpeted as Tamil words, and hence the titles need to be changed! This seems to be a pointless debate, because innumerable Tamil words have their origins in other dravidian languages but have today come to be a part of the Tamil language. So why this cry over Ayan and Aegan? And by the way how did 'Nottu' in Onbadhu Rooba Nottu pass off as a Tamil word, given its English origin?!
