The 53rd Filmfare awards function was held in Chennai on Saturday (9th September, 2006). The Best Movie award was won by Anniyan produced by Oscar Ravichandran, Shankar received the best director award and Vikram received the best actor award for the same. Asin received the best actress award for the movie Ghajini.
Prakashraj received the best villain award for the movie Sivakasi and Raj Kiran received the best supportive actor while Saranya received best supportive actress award for the movie Thavamai Thavamirunthu. Vadivelu received the best comedian award for the movie Chandramukhi.
Arya received the best debut actor award for the movie Arindhum Ariyamalum and best debut actress award was received by Padma Priya for the movie Thavamai Thavamirunthu. Ravi Varman and Manikandan received the best cameraman award for the movie Anniyan. Sabu Cyril was given best art director award for the movie Anniyan. Antony received the best editor award for the movie Ghajini.
Harrish Jayaraj and Vairamuthu received best music director and lyricist award respectively for the movie Anniyan. Karthik received best playback singer (Male) award for the movie Ghajini and Binny Krishnakumar received best playback singer (Female) award for the movie Chandramukhi. Peter Haynes received the best action director award for the movie Anniyan.
