Live concert The Banyan is an NGO started in 1993 with dreams, hopes, very little money and a handful of people who believed in the cause. Today, their vision of setting up a residential care and rehabilitation centre for Chennai's mentally ill destitute women has come true with the support of many benefactors and dedicated volunteers. It is dedicated to providing care and rehabilitation facilities for mentally challenged homeless women through The Banyan. To reach out to mentally ill and destitute women in Chennai, and offer not just a shelter, but a new life to these uncared-for women is the aim of The Banyan. To finance the growing needs of he Banyan, various film stars and artistes have grouped together to offer their free service and present a grand musical and cultural extravaganza on 5th February, 2006 at Jeppiar College. The great stars supporting this great event are Dr. Kamal Haasan, Maniratnam, Vasanth, Revathi, A.R. Rahman, Shilpa Shetty, Viviek Oberoi, Genelia, Shobhana, Simran, Shreya, Sandhya, Simbhu, Lakshmi Rai, Ramesh, Vineeth, Manikandan, Ramana and many others. This programme was earlier scheduled for December, but was postponed due to unprecedented rains.
