We cannot stop waxing eloquent about Sivaji and how Rajinikanth appears, acts, emotes and delivers his dialogues. We will now tell you about how Sivaji came to look fair like the waxing moon, like a Caucasian, in the song sequence "Style". No, it was not due to the effect of any wax or makeup.
On 16.6.07, cinematographer K.V. Anand revealed that this effect was not achieved by any extraordinary makeup, but by computer generated graphics (CGI) by the Chennai-based firm Indian Arts, taking a year to complete.
While Rajni is admired for his dark skin, director Shankar had a dream to show the Indian audiences how Rajni would have looked, had he been a Caucasian or "Vellai Tamizhan". To achieve this effect, the song was shot on Rajinikanth in Spain during May 2006. It was shot again on the same sets on a British dancer, who had earlier danced in the background, but this time he was in the foreground, in Rajni's place. Then his skin tones as filmed under various conditions of light, shade, indoors and outdoors, were copied on to each of the 6000 plus frames where Rajni was in the foreground. It is the first time that this experiment had been tried. This painstaking labour took one year to complete, and the final version is now available for all to admire.
The CGI team in India Arts set to work, beginning their work by creating a new plug-in as part of the Digital Fusion CGI software. What is this effect called? Mr. Guhan jokingly called it "The Shankar Effect".
We all know that Rajni is famous and has a stupendous fan following abroad, especially in Japan. Now producer AVM Saravanan has revealed that there are enquiries to dub Sivaji into various languages for export. The languages include Japanese, Malay and Chinese. So while Jackie Chan mouths dialogues in Tamil here, Rajni will deliver his dialogues in different languages across the world! Keep it up, Thalaiva, in all languages!
