Sridevi, the Queen Bee of Hindi and Tamil cinema, celebrates her birthday today.
The actress faced the camera for the first time for the film Kandhan Karunai (1967). During her early career, she acted in a number of Tamil and Malayalam movies.
In 1976, she got her first big break in Tamil movies as a heroine in K. Balachander's Moondru Mudichu, where she starred opposite both Kamal Haasan and Rajinikanth. This film brought together the most famous trio in Tamil cinema.
This film was followed by many successes like Guru, Sankarlal, Sigappu Rojakkal, Thaayillamal Naanillai, Meendum Kokila, Vaazhve Maayam, Varumaiyin Niram Sigappu, Neela Malargal,Moondram Pirai,16 Vayathinile with Kamal Haasan and Dharmayuddham, Priya, Pokkiri Raja, Thanikattu Raja, Adutha Varisu, Nan Adimai Illai, with Rajinikanth.
She was the number one actress in Tamil films during 1979-83.
She also entered Tollywood and acted with all major heroes in Telugu. Her notable films include Konda Veeti Simham, Vetagadu, Sardar Paparayudu, Bobbili Puli, Mudulla Koduku, Premabhishekham, Bangaru Kanku, Premakanuka, Kanchu Kagada, Kalavari Samsaram, Krishnavatharam, Borripellum Bolludu and Khaidi Rudrayya.
Following the footsteps of Vijayanthimala and Padmini, she made her foray into Hindi films with Solva Saawan in 1978, remake of her Tamil Film 16 Vayathinile. The film did not do very well at the box office. But the success of Himmatwala with Jeetendra made her a Bollywood star.
This was followed by amazing performances in films like Sadma (remake of Moondram Pirai), Tohfa, Nagina, Mr. India, Chandni,Chaalbaaz, Lamhe, Khuda Gawah, Laadla and Gumrah.
Sridevi became the No. 1 star and acted with all the top stars in Bollywood too. The failure of the multicrore Roop ki Rani Choron ka Raja proved to be a major setback.
After the superhit Judaai (1997), she quit films and married Producer Boney Kapoor. She has two daughters, Jhanvi and Khushi.
After a six-year hiatus, Sridevi returned to the small screen, briefly, in the popular sitcom Malini Iyer (2004-2005).
She is now making a comeback with the film Halla Bol in Hindi as well as her home production. There has also been lots of speculation of her coming back to Kollywood with Kamal Haasan in a P. Vasu film.
Galatta.com wishes the talented star a wonderful birthday and hopes that we see her soon on the silver screen.
