It is very difficult for assistant directors to avoid the influence of the directors whom they worked under when they make their debut as a director, but what is not difficult is borrowing bits and pieces from their mentor's movies, put them together, give it a name and release it as a movie. You can give Balaji Sakthivel credit for doing this mix n match movie, Samurai to perfection in a way. Balaji an assistant to director Shankar should have refrained his 'hero-worship' or respect for Shankar off the screen because this 'Ctrl+C' and 'Ctrl+V' formula is reflecting not in a good-way for our hero Chiyaan Vikram. But the one good thing, actually three good things you can look forward to is that if you had missed watching Shankar's earlier movies 'Gentleman, 'Indian' and Ajith's 'Citizen' it is all there in a three-in-one mix for you in 'Samurai'. Vikram plays 'Robinhood' when necessity arises and otherwise a normal harmless guy who teaches school children. He is also secretly in love with his old neighbour's grand-daughter (Anitha). So what is Samurai - the one man army secretively up to? Kidnapping. He kidnaps corrupt government officials and politicians who manage to get away with their deeds through the slips in the law. Finally Vikram and his gang are thwarted during one of the abduction process by the righteous police officer Nasser. Vikram gives a convincing explanation in front of the judge for his actions but the law doesn't bend rules for him. But then the public now takes law into their hands. And why did Vikram start kidnapping? You will start regretting asking that question even more than having made your choice to see the movie. In a never-ending flashback, they unveil the suicide of Neha, Vikram's best friend, when they were back in a medical college as students. Among the list of other unanswered questions about movie logic, you would like to add "What makes people who make movies think that only medical student face the brunt end of any system?". Its high time they realize all students are the privileged lot of other shortcomings in our educational system and social system. Vikram, Anitha and Nasser have done what is expected out of them, nothing more..nothing less. Harris Jayaraj's songs will make you sing along, atleast something to get you going as you walk out of the theatre.
