Amirtham is truly amritam (nectar), created with love, and to be enjoyed as an elixir.

Amritha (Navya Nair) is the daughter of a highly orthodox Iyengar priest (Girish Karnad) of a Perumal temple and a tradition-bound mother Rukmani (Carnatic singer Anuradha Krishnamoorthy). Ganesh (Ganesh), a total atheist and rationalist, is the son of temple nadaswaram vidwan (Rajiv). In other words, his world and her father’s are poles apart. But in spite of the differences in thinking, in caste, and in all other aspects, they fall in love. Naturally, there is strong opposition to this affair, but the pair remains adamant, without any clear idea how to proceed.

Deposits of underground crude oil are found in the town and the government decides to take over the entire town for further oil prospecting, throwing out the town’s citizens and destroying the ancient and historic Perumal temple which is dearer than their lives. Ganesh starts his protest against the government trying to evict the persons on the grounds of human rights. The Iyengar temple priest joins him, but for saving his sacred temple. How they come together with the common cause of opposing the government’s attempts to vacate the town, plan their strategy and succeed in their attempt, forms the rest of the movie.

This could possibly be Navya Nair’s best role till date. She has the actions and body language of a shy Iyengar girl perfect. The dubbing has also been done by her, and her pronunciation is truly faultless. Girish Karnad, playing the role of her father, is his usual underplayed efficient self. Anuradha Krishnamoorthy, who appeared in the serial Sahana, is a Carnatic singer, and reveals her true talent. Newcomer Ganesh has given his best and is a talent to look out for.

Bhavadharini’s classical music truly makes the movie lyrical. This is her first movie, and she is a true successor to the Maestro, who has also lent his voice for one song. camera work and the art work are also of the highest order. Director-producer Kannan (Vedham Puthithu) has given a truly enjoyable clean film to enjoy with good story, dialogues, suspense, topical plot, songs, and other necessary ingredients to make a film enjoyable. No skin show, no loud music, only lyrical enjoyment. If you have any taste for clean entertainment, don’t miss this movie!
