Oru Kalluriyin Kadhai has now hit the screens after much hype. Arya, who is expected to be the next hot star after the success of Arindhum Ariyamalum and Ullam Ketkumae is the hero of this story which is set in a college.
The film has tried exploring the depths of friendship and love by unveiling the travails of the mind. The film centers on Satya (Arya), who undergoes some serious depressive disorder, which makes him almost a zombie. His friends learn about this and also come to know of his unspoken love for Jothi (Sonia Agarwal), his college-mate. On the advice of the Psychiatrist, his friends who share a unique bondage with him decide to ‘recreate’ their college atmosphere. They also manage to bring Jothi who has just got engaged by concealing the fact that Satya was in love with her. They succeed in getting everyone together to pseudo-live their lives in college for a month.
A lot of emotional drama takes place, especially when the farewell day nears. Whether Satya recovers and confesses his love to Jothi and whether the couple unite forms the crux of the climax.
Nandha Periyasamy, the debutant director has handled a rather complex theme. Unfortunately, both friendship and love are not conveyed in a convincing way. Satya’s illness is not given a name until the very end of the flick, not even by Psychiatrist Charuhassan. Nevertheless, the director can be commended for handling a good story with a complex theme, without the usual masala.
Arya and Sonia have done complete justice to their roles. Mention must also be made of Jai Varma, Sasi and the others who have played Satya’s friends with perfection.
Yuvan Shankar Raja’s music and Madhi’s camera succeed in reviving the nostalgic moments. To sum up, Oru Kalluriyin Kadhai is a neat film, but for the lukewarm emotions.
