Mutthirai, the maiden attempt of Anees Tanveer, wife of late cinematographer-turned-director Jeeva, marks her foray into creative direction and production. "My dream is to make an action film with a romantic mix. But this story satisfied all my other aspiration criteria and hence I took it up. Mutthirai has non-stop suspense, action and romance," says Anees, who has apprenticed under the able guidance of P.C. Sreeram and Jayendra. Anees has also worked on plot and screenplay development and costume designing in her Jeeva's films. Mutthirai is directed by Srinath who has worked with Jeeva.

Mutthirai's two heroes do not belong to the cinematic, larger-than-life type. They are the worst criminals, thieves by profession. But the style and knack with which they carry out their jobs is extraordinary. They do not engage in petty robbery, make negligible money or get caught. With an unlimited zest for life, they make clear-cut plans, execute them carefully and embezzle big amounts from affluent people and places. Like players in a chess game, these dangerously smart boys plot and plan their moves according to the opponents' decisions. They judge their weaknesses and exploit them in a favourable way. Film Institute student and Koothu Pattarai apprentice Daniel Balaji, who made the whole industry sit up and take notice of his performance in Vettaiyadu Vilayadu and Pollaadhavan, is one of the heroes of Mutthirai. Nithin Satya, who is ready to experiment with a variety of roles in his career, is the other hero.

Mutthirai girls! Lakshmi Rai and newcomer Manjari are the film's heroines. In addition to Lakshmi Rai's usual dose of glamour, the tall and gorgeous actress has ample opportunity to perform in the film. "Manjari's looks are enough to make a strong impression in the audiences' minds," says Anees.
