The Tamil film industry seems to have been gripped by the charm of yesteryear movies. First it was the remix of the evergreen numbers, when nearly every new movie had one old song with remixed score. Remakes are made in an attempt to recreate the magic of those blockbuster movies made with amazing directorial intelligence backed by strong storylines. The industry is also witnessing a trend of new films picking up titles of yesteryear movies, but the plot need not be the same. Titles of old box-office hits have more appeal and help in attracting audiences.
So also Guru Sishyan, a movie with Sathyaraj and Sundar C. in the lead, which has different storyline from its yesteryear namesake. "The story demanded such a title; we shortlisted 50 titles, finally we used the old one. Since the original is 20 years old, we are not exploiting its popularity," opines its director Sakthi Chidambaram. The film also stars Hemamalini, Saranya and Santhanam in prominent roles.
So what's this Guru Sishyan about? Sathyaraj wants a modern girl and is all for looks despite having been married to a homely woman Saranya. His brother-in-law Sundar considers this disloyal. Sundar also has the notion that beauty is only skin deep and will not last. What happens next forms the crux of the story!
Produced by Shakthi Chidambaram himself, the movie's musical score is by Dheena. Interestingly, Sundar C. has also crooned the title song. "Mohanlal is one of the finest actors whose versatility amazes me. I am a great fan of Lal sir. When director Sundar C. became an actor, I felt he had the same style of acting as Lal. After watching him as an actor in at least three films, I can proudly call him the Mohanlal of Tamil Nadu," Sathyaraj said at the audio launch of Guru Sishyan.
Sathayaraj had worked with Shakthi Chidambaram for several films earlier, including Ennama Kannu, Englishkaran and Maha Nadigan. Sundar C. has teamed up with the director earlier in Sandai.
