Director Gandhi Krishna's earlier film Chellame made us sit up and take notice of hius talents. Produced by Oscar Films V. Ravichandran, Anandha Thandavam is the next film from the talented director (former assistant to Shankar). Like Chellame, this film too has love as its central theme. The movie is based on writer Sujatha's story 'Pirivom Sandhippom' which was published as a serial in a popular Tamil weekly, and still remains a favourite piece for many.
In this film, Gandhi Krishna has captured the essence of youthful life with finesse. The story revolves around two youngsters Raghu and Madhumitha. Siddharth, a new face to Tamil cinema, debuts as the hero. It is usual to compare any new hero's character to the hero of an earlier movie. But Anandha Thandavam's Raghu is more appealing and different from his counterparts. He has verve and determination to achieve things in life.
Raghu is also the perfect foil for Madhumitha. Madhumitha portrays the role of a sweet and warm individual. Raghu and Madhumitha are attracted towards each other. But there is another character that interferes with their relationship. The film entirely deals with their youthful life, their fast-paced lifestyle and all things significant in their world. Tamanna, who earned great recognition for her performance in Kalloori, is the heroine. The supporting cast includes Rukmini, Charlie, Madanbob, Kalairani and Kitty.
When a literary work is adapted on screen, certain cinematic considerations have to be made. Unlike the novel that keeps the readers engrossed for a longer period of time, the film has to effectively convey the theme in just two hours, using music and visuals. Gandhi Krishna has tried his best not to disturb the depth of the characters in the screenplay. The film stays true to the narrative of the novel. The on screen characters do not in any way weaken the interest one had while reading the plot. With storytellers increasingly accommodating to multiplex audiences, Gandhi Krishna's Anandha Thandavam will comfort us with its simple yet touching love theme.
There are some thoughtful additions and modifications from the original plot in the movie. The concept of love letters in the novel is replaced by the glamour of mobile calls and messages. Anandha Thandavam is dense in details; most of the incidents that occur in the novel find a place in the film too. Author Sujatha has also written the dialogues for the movie.
Love and music are closely connected. G.V. Prakash has composed some lilting tunes for Vairamuthu's soulful lyrics. The first schedule of shooting has begun in Ooty. The crew will then move to Thenkasi, Coutralam, Ambasamudram, and Papanasam. A considerable portion of the film will be shot in New York. Camera is by Jeeva Shankar and editing by V.T. Vijayan.
