Cinema logic is fully reversed for Kathavarayan. Till date, only villains were shown as baddies and the hero was the righteous man, who beat them into sure submission.
In Kathavarayan, the hero is a bootlegger, an illiterate rogue who deems his ideas and opinions to be the best. An orphan, he has grown up in the streets of his native village, fed and fostered by the residents. For him, his experience is his only source of learning and violence is his only means of expression. He attacks those who tease and trouble him and distract him from his work. For his livelihood, he resorts to brewing arrack illegally. Because of his occupation and outlook, he remains constantly in police records and is the most wanted criminal in the village.
The heroine keeps an eye on him though he roughly ignores all her efforts to strike up a neighbourly conversation. But she does not give up and keeps trying to instil the value of good deeds and to reform him as a good and respectable individual. However, she cannot also deny that she is attracted to him in spite of her best efforts. She likes his tough demeanour and the absolute sincerity he shows towards his work. How is she going to make him understand her feelings? How is she going to tame the beast in him? Will she be able to do it before the law takes him into custody? What tormenting experiences will she have to go through? Wait and watch Kathavarayan!
Karan, the hero of Kathavarayan, is very happy with the film's novel plotline. "It is only the story and the hero's characterization that attracted me to accept the offer. It will be a different film with all box-office ingredients," assures Karan. Karan is a hero who has never believed in forcefully stuffing stylish masala and meaningless heroism in his movies. His recent releases Karrupusamy Kuthagaitharar and Kokki too avoided popular ingredients, artifice and defied conventional commercial norms. Yet, both films got wide recognition.
Heroine Vidhisha is from Mumbai and has acted in a couple of Telugu films. Radha, who debuted in Sundara Travels, is the other heroine. Three songs have been shot in Malaysia. The major part of the shooting has taken place in and around Hogenakkal. The chase sequence involving Karan and the police is a thrilling one. In fact, the local residents believed it to be a real-life scene and watched it in awe. Music is by Srikanth Deva.
Director Salangai Durai is confident about Kathavarayan's success. He has penned the dialogues and handled the screenplay in addition to the direction of the film. "The film has a good story, action, sentiment, love and thrill," affirms Durai.
