Drona, also spelt as Dhrona, presented by D. Saraswati and produced by D.S. Rao under Sai Krishna Productions banner introduces J. Karunkumar (S.S. Rajamouli's protégé) as director. Nitin and Priyamani come together for the first time in this project.
The film has been described as the chronicles of a strict father, an upright police officer, and his son, who believes in taking the law in his own hands. The director says the film is based on terrorism that is infiltrating India by land and sea; the plot revolves around how the hero teaches a lesson to the extremists and anti-social elements. Nitin's father, a sincere police officer, always wants to be on the right side of the law. But when his son commits a mistake due to some unforeseen circumstances, how the shocked father deals with the issue is the crux of the story. The film has the right doses of action, romance and comedy to appeal to all classes of people.

Some of the film's scenes shot at Gokarna in Karnataka are said to be the film's main attraction. Some action scenes and key sequences shot on Vizag beach will also be another highlight of the film.
