Iyakkam is from the workshop of director Sanjayram, whose earlier film Veeramum Eeramum was praised for its novel script. Iyakkam is about the power war between a wicked leader and a District Collector.
Andavar (Sudhakar Vasanth), a powerful man, runs an orphanage in his village. The orphanage offers shelter and maternity care to many poor and expectant mothers. They are provided with a safe and secure environment for free and give birth to their babies in the orphanage. In exchange for this security and comfort provided, Andavar takes undue advantage of their delicate situation for his personal benefit. With the help of a team of doctors, he clinically ensures the babies are born at times which are predicted to be auspicious for him. Why? Because he believes in the prediction that this will raise his status and extend his life span. These babies grow up to become young individuals whose lives are devoted to serve and foster the mighty 'Andavar Kingdom'. Andavar keeps his secret well-guarded; his wicked schemes are known only to very few persons outside his influential circle.
One of the inmates from the orphanage grows up to be a fine, intelligent young man and is appointed Collector (Rishi Kumar) in his native district. Probing one of his seniors' cases, he comes to know that Andavar is solely responsible for the untimely death of that senior. After collecting sufficient proof against Andavar, the righteous Collector swiftly issues orders to arrest him. In the war that follows between him and Andavar, the young Collector loses his family in a fatal fire accident (naturally, arranged by Andavar).
Dejected, the Collector gives up his job and joins an organization run by Chinna Marudhu (Sanjayram) with the sole aim of extracting his revenge from Andavar. How does he do it? Does the young man possess enough strength and wisdom to upset the 'Andavar empire'? Is the power-equation settled in his favour? See Iyakkam to know!
Rishi Kumar's role is very intense and he has performed his role in a competant manner. His romantic episodes with Sruthibala are particularly enjoyable. Sruthibala too, steals audiences' hearts through her simple, touching role as Rishi Kumar's wife. Sanjayram's character as an angry militant is extraordinary and will remain in our hearts for long. Sudhakar Vasanth is one actor who rises above all the others in the cast through his commendable performance. M.S. Bhasker's comedy induces a few hearty laughs. Leo's camerawork and Praveen Mani's music offer adequate support to the theme.
With such a strong storyline, had the sequences been more convincingly packed, Iyakkam would have risen to become a really remarkable saga!
