Beat the drums, blow the bugle and roll the red carpet for Super Good Films and the brave men of Aaran! Major Ravi has presented a magnificent war epic, the first of its kind in South Indian cinema, and he doesn’t fail to impress, with the true picturisation of battle-worn landscapes, and valiant heroes. Aaran fulfills the monumental expectations of the viewers!
The movie begins with the deep tones of Kamal Haasan narration as the shot zooms in on a war-riddled Kashmir. Major Mahadevan (Mohanlal) is a Commando in the Border Security Force (BSF). He is a man of extraordinary mettle and wit, and can organize attacks and woo victory in even the most perilous situations. Havildar Jaikumar (Jeevaa) is the foreman in Major Mahadevan’s battalion. He executes the Major’s plans to the T, and wins his trust and confidence.
Jai leaves on a wedding vacation to his hometown, to get married to his sweetheart and fiancée Sandhya (Gopika). At the same time in Kashmir, Pakistani terrorists infiltrate across the border and start creating havoc in Kashmir. Major Mahadevan, is left with no option but to summon Jai to the battle-front. Jai leaves his young wife of only 3 days and returns to Kashmir.
The Major and Jai together thwart many of the destructive attempts of the terrorists and save the local people. But the main target of the infiltrators headed by Nawab, is destroying a mosque in Kashmir and creating a major devastation. The terrorists plan an attack and enter the house of Kashmiri family. They torture everyone in the house and hold them hostage.
Police officer Gopinath (Biju Menon) informs the BSF about this unfortunate incident. The rest of the story is about how Major Mahadevan and Jai rescue the family and foil the evil plots of the terrorists.
Mohanlal has given an outstanding performance as Major Mahadevan. He gets into the skin of the role and has given a performance that is sure to win accolades! His conversation with his superior Dutta (Prakashraj), when he says, “I’ll let you know every detail sir, if I come back alive”, reflects the true mindset of every army hero. Though the romantic track between Mohanlal and Lakshi Gopalsamy is only one song long, it stands out!
Jeevaa is as brilliant as the Malayalam super star. He is full of life and has given a powerful performance. He shines in all the scenes, especially the one in which he understands Mohanlal’s intentions by the movement of his eyes, and performs his job in a second. The camaraderie shared by the two heroes is fantastic.
The Gopika-Jeevaa romantic interlude is a small story in itself. It is short yet sweetly presented. Gopika has realized the importance of her role and given an adequate performance.
The brilliant director Major Ravi, wins a place as one of the best cinematic story tellers of our times. His work Aaran is embellished with amazing cinematography by Thiru, razor edged dialogues by Bala Krishnan, well executed fight sequences by Shakthi and effective background score by Joshua Sridhar. Joshua’s music gels well with the movie.
To sum it up, Aaran is a power-packed entertainer that leaves a lasting impression even after the show ends. Hats off to the director who has dared to make a film of this magnitude with perfection in every angle!!! Check out the Aaran website www.aaranthemovie.com for more information on the movie.
