Oscar Films' Ravichandran's Marudhamalai is a typical movie sprinkled with the much-liked action masala. It is the familiar story of the battle between a dutiful police constable and a local gangster.
Marudhamalai (Arjun) is the son of a retired police constable (Nasser). The father's aspirations dwell on making his son a police officer. Marudhamalai is appointed as a constable and gets a posting in a remote village called Nachiapuram. He works under Encounter Ekambaram (Vadivelu).
Maassi (Malayalam actor Lal) is an influential man who rules Nachiapuram. The mighty man does not allow elections to be held in the territory and is merciless towards those who disobey him.
Suryanarayanan (Raghuvaran) is the duty-conscious Election Commissioner who wants to conduct a peaceful poll in Nachiapuram. He motivates the residents of the place to oppose Maassi and establish their rights to elect their representative.
D-day arrives. Maassi and his goons thrash all the voters who come to cast their votes. Nasser appeals on behalf of the innocent public and Maassi attacks him too. Marudhamalai leaps into action, defending his father and puts Maassi in jail. The story continues on how Maassi takes revenge on Marudhamalai.
Marudhamalai is not a radically different film for Arjun. Yet, he has demonstrated his involvement in the role of an angry cop very well. Arjun has personally performed risky shots, including one in which he jumps from the tenth floor of a multi-storeyed building. Nila is Arjun's lovely companion in the film.
Raghuvaran, as a principled Election Commissioner, and Nasser, as the aspiring father, have contributed their best.
The comedy track between constable Arjun and head constable Vadivel is thoroughly enjoyable. Though Arjun has enacted the roles of high-ranking police officers in the past, he has agreed to act as a lowly police constable here; as with his earlier roles, he has continued to act with aplomb. The difference is that here he takes orders from Head Constable Encounter Ekambaram (Vadivelu), so the results are hilarious, yet thought-provoking.
The cast also includes 'Bose' Venkat, Kadhal Dhandapani, and Shanmugarajan.
D. Imman has scored music; Al Ameen, who choreographed for Dhoom 2, has brought out some extraordinary stunt effects on screen.
Suraaj, whose earlier film was the Sundar C. starrer Thalainagaram, is the director of Marudhamalai.
The film has equal share of action and comedy and shines as a typical entertainer.
