Sivi is a story of love and betrayal made exciting with the element of horror! In a nutshell, it's the story of the ghost of a young girl who comes to take revenge on the man who cheated her in love. Yogi and Anuja are lovers while they are in college; she believes he will be faithful to her. However, his love is not true; he rapes her and leaves her. Wronged and unhappy, she commits suicide only to return as a ghost to torment Yogi and his new girlfriend (Jeyashree). Does he manage to outwit and destroy this evil spirit? That's for you to watch and find out!
Sivi is a commendable attempt in the genre of horror that is greatly neglected by other mainstream Tamil film-makers. The horror sequences, in spite of having been inspired by Hollywood movies, are well-taken. Director Senthilnathan's efforts need to be appreciated, as also the efforts of the special effects team.
The sequence that shows Yogi running for his life from his hotel room on the fifth floor, down the flight of steps only to find himself back on the fifth floor is brilliant conceptualization. The scene with Yogi trying to escape down the ladder, only to find the ghost chasing him down on all fours, sends a chill down your spine! These, and many other sequences, manage to scare and thrill the audience, singing success for the director.
Dharan's music is more than commendable. It's been over a year since his previous Tamil feature Parijatham. Just as in that film, he has managed to produce some real good melodies and interesting compositions. 'Mayavi Neeya' in the voices of Haricharan, Krish and Shruthi is a haunting melody that lingers on one's lips long after it is over. 'O Nenje' with its rap piece done by Dr. Burn is an interesting mix. The other songs and the overall background score are aptly composed to suit the movie.
Sivi is very close to the plot of RGV's Darling released in Hindi last week, starring Esha Deol (as the ghost), Fardeen Khan and Issha Koppiker. Has one been copied from the other? Did a ghost lift the plot from one and pass it on to the other? If so, which is the original and which is the copy? See both movies and then decide for yourself! The comedy track by Citi Babu and Aarthy do win some laughter and could have been extended. On the whole, Sivi is a noteworthy attempt and a worthwhile watch.
