Dreams don't come true all by themselves. For Arun Vijay, determination, hard work and a strong will to succeed has led him all along. After Priyam, Pandavabhoomi and Iyarkai, Arun Vijay has realised his career dream through Thavam, produced by Arjun.
Arjun has presented Thavam with a view to focus on the talents of Arun Vijay, getting him his long-overdue recognition. And Arun Vijay has proved himself by giving his best for Thavam; all the effort has culminated in a worthy product.
Screen love is always associated with failure. Thavam is different, for it gives a new perspective about love, obstinacy and then some.
Subramani (Arun Vijay) is at the suicide point with a firm decision to end his life. Sumathi (Vandana) is also is at the same place for the same reason. Both get into a casual chat. Knowing that the mighty fall will cause great physical damage and pain, both of them opt for a different way to kill themselves. This time they choose to end their lives in bachelor Subramani's apartment. Leaving a note, both consume an overdose of sleeping pills. But to their dismay, Subramani and Sumathi are rescued by the landlord. The very next day, they part from each other, apparently losing links. But the feelings these two people have for each other do not diminish.
Time progresses. Subramani's marriage is settled with a girl of his mother's choice; Sumathi faces a forced wedding with her uncle. Subramani and Sumathi again attempt to challenge their destinies, and individually walk out to take the world on their own. This time their attempts work out well and they taste success.
Subramani and Sumathi meet for the second time at their workplace. A strong feeling of recognition rekindles their love for each other.
Meanwhile, Madhumita (Arpitha), daughter of the company's MD, takes a liking to Subramani and thus becomes the villain to nip their budding relationship. She conjures up all tricks and strategems to block their love; after she comes to know of their past, her vengeance gets doubled. Subramani overcomes Madhumitha's plans, battles against Sumathi's forced marriage to her uncle and joins her in the end.
Story is Thavam's mainstay and it is supplemented with a cast that delivers. Thavam has smashed all doubts about actor Arun Vijay, screen-heir of veteran actor Vijaykumar. He definitely appeals as the perfection-seeking hero. Emotions and stunts come easily to this young actor and he has used them to produce great effect in the movie. Vandana has given her best to equal Arun Vijay's performance, and she has almost achieved it. With a little more practice, her acting skills are bound to look up.
Arpitha as the lady villain is convincing. Vadivelu handles the comedy element in the story and has done a perfect job. Vennira Aadai Murthy shines as the character artist.
'Kanadasa' has good lyrics by Tabu Shankar set to an enjoyable tune by D. Imman.
Thavam is authentic proof to Arun Vijay's and Action King Arjun's efforts; its success seems assured beyond doubt.
