The magnificence and magnitude of the film is what hits you in the very opening war sequence. You realize that this will be no ordinary narrative of a historic romance, but a larger-than-life rendition! Fathoming the greatness of the Mughal Emperor and the deep-seated passionate love story, Ashutosh Gowarikar has gone to mighty lengths to make the movie as big as the king himself! Jodhaa Akbar is easily the most opulent historic epic on screen. And to have this glorious movie speak in our regional tongue - Tamil - is indeed a treat! Tamil audiences will find amidst all the grandeur a hero who is brave, worshipped by his people and who can love as deeply as any other man, maybe even more!
History lessons teach us the greatness and valour that made Akbar the greatest Mughal King, but Gowarikar's movie tells us how valiantly he loved his Jodhaa.
Married more for political liaison than for love, Jodhaa and Akbar discover a true soul-fulfilling love through the course of their forced marriage. Jodhaa, the proud and beautiful Rajput Priness Jodhaa, is demoralized by this marriage born out of political necessity and remains immovable and hard-hearted at first. And now, Akbar faces the biggest challenge of his life - to win over this defiant lady. Thus begins the most compelling true love story.
As Akbar, we have Hrithik Roshan, who looks like he was born to play the role. With his demigod looks, he carries off the role with finesse - heavy armour and all! The scene where he is shown taming a wild elephant is one of the most pulse-racing episodes in the movie. In the climax fight sequences, and every time he whips out his sword, Hrithik proves he fits the role perfectly!
As Jodhaa, we have Aishwarya Rai Bachchan and she is picture-perfect. As the haughty princess and as the aching lover, she lives the role. Her well-fitted outfits of that era and glittering jewellery give her that extra sheen.
Sonu Sood, Nikitin Dheer and Ila Arun have given some electrifying performances, their finest, yet! Other stars who shine bright and catch our eye in this extravagant movie are Punam S. Sinha, Kulbhushan Kharbanda, Raza Murad and Rajesh Vivek.
Gowarikar has taken a piece of history and presented it to us in the simplest and most delectable way. His handling of the story deserves special appreciation.
A.R. Rahman has outdone himself. He has set aside his usual style and brought to us music typical of the Mughal Era; making us believe that this was the kind of music that was popular then! His songs suit the mood of the film. 'Azeem-o-Shaan Shahenshah' and 'Muzhumathy' are beautiful compositions and the choreography for the former is the best in the movie.
With Ravi Deva at the helm of the action, the fights have come out wonderfully. The climax fight between Hrithik and Nikitin Dheer is awe-inspiring! Raju Khan, Rekha Chinni Prakash and Ash Kumar have added soul to ARR's tunes with spellbinding choreography. Neetu Lulla's costumes and Nitin Desai's sets are amazing! The screenplay never slackens, the dialogues are crisp and the romantic track is beautiful. Kiran Deohans' camera has painted the most beautiful pictures that shall haunt us for a long time to come! Tanishq has made the ethnic glittering jewellery of that era after great research, and the result is just wonderful.
Gowarikar and his team have worked in tandem to bring out an impressive biopic and have succeeded. Kudos to the entire team for the brilliance that is Jodhaa Akbar!
