Why is Singakutty special? Because it is the debut film of a young man who has been renamed Sivaji and is the scion of an illustrious line of cinema stalwarts. Grandson of (with screen name Sivaji) of the legendary Chevalier Sivaji Ganesan, who is a glowing inspiration for everyone in the industry, son of producer Ram Kumar, nephew of Prabhu, this young man comes with a responsibility to live up to his family name. Does he come up to expectations? Yes, he sure does.

The movie begins in Chennai with a young man Kadhir (Sivaji) chasing a ruffian, catching and retrieving a bomb from him. The media swarms over to the spot and congratulates Kadhir for saving the lives of the innocent passers-by. After his brief interview is telecast, Kadhir is overjoyed when he gets a job in the Police. With a heady sense of success and achievement, Kadhir boards a bus to Madurai, his hometown.

A flashback reveals the significance of the police job for Kadhir. His doting mother (Saranya) aspired that he join the Police force. So when Kadhir fell in love with rich and lovely Gowri Munjal, his mother postpone their wedding till he got the desired job.

Cut to the present. Kadhir gets down from the bus. At that very moment, a phone that has been planted in his baggage starts ringing. The phone conveys the shocking message that his family has been abducted. Kadhir has no choice but to obey the caller's instructions. Determined to save his family and to trace the person behind the entire dastardly operation, Kadhir treads on a treacherous path. He frantically goes about fulfilling the orders given over the phone. Who is the villain behind the scheme? What is his agenda? Why has he singed out Kadhir and his family? How does Kadhir save his family? Does he locate more bombs? Are there any more explosive surprises? Watch Singakutty to find out!

Singakutty has the thrill and action similar to a Hollywood movie. Director A. Venkatesh's displays his experience and expertise in the narrative. Presented with a novel angle, the incidents progress in an unpredictable manner. We see vibrant heroism and typical action and stunt sequences, yet these do not suppress the story's innate charm. Sivaji has effectively donned the challenging 'action garb' in his very first movie, which should bring him laurels and an established career identity. Gowri Munjal too has done a good job. Vivek-Malavika's comedy is enjoyable. Dialogues by Patttukottai Prabhakar are casual and realistic with no dramatic touches. Ace cameraman R.D. Rajasekar has handled the cinematography; chase sequences are impressive; editing is by Antony, music is by Prasanna Sekar. 'Aattama Therottama' is the remix number in the album.

Singakutty, a youthful action entertainer, has served as the fitting launch pad for its hero Sivaji.
