In 2004, Aarya won our hearts for his unique definition and understanding of love. Five years later, the Sukumar-Allu Arjun duo is back with Aarya 2. But this time, he is a psychologically unsound character with his own dilemmas and quirky habits. With highs and lows of his character, Aarya 2 is both interesting and sympathetic, but is definitely not a worthy successor of his mature predecessor.

THE CHARACTERS

There are three main characters: Aarya (Allu Arjun) is an orphan who is mentally unsound and over-fond of his friend Ajay (Navadeep). Both Ajay and Aarya fall in love with Geeta (Kajal Agarwal) an employee in Ajay's company.

THE PLOT

Aarya and Ajay are orphans; a rich couple visits the orphanage to adopt a child. They adopt Ajay, who grows up as a rich man while Aarya grows up as a poor guy. Aarya is mentally unsound and consumed with possessiveness for his friend Ajay. Though the latter never accepts him, Aarya still thinks Ajay is his everything in life. Ajay starts a software company and Aarya joins him as an employee. Geeta is the new employee of the company. Both Ajay and Aarya fall in love with her. The rest of the story is about how these two try to make Geeta fall for them.

THE TECHNIQUE

Performances

Allu Arjun is perfect as Aarya. He has portrayed the character and qualities of a psychotic flawlessly. He shines in emotional scenes in the second half. Allu Arjun is probably the best dancer in Tollywood today. That is the reason why he has performed hugely difficult dances in a fluid and effortless manner in the first four songs.

Kajal Agarwal is good as a girl who is not committed to any guy at heart, but fails to make an impact. Navadeep looks charming as a guy with selfish and practical thinking. Shraddha Das is gorgeous but has no opportunity to to display her talent. Ajay is excellent as Subba Reddy, mainly due to his entertaining characterization. Brahmanandam is partly entertaining.

Music

Devi Sri Prasad's music is excellent, especially the background score. All the songs are well-placed and ensure a visual treat. Sukumar comes up with a fabulous job of canning all the songs with energy and verve. Background music is also good.

Cinematography

Rajasekhar's work is top class. Kudos to the special effect team. The montage shots in songs are brilliant. His work with the camera is the primary reason why this film looks so stylish.

Others

Art direction by Chinna is amazing and he does both the urban and rural set up with great care. Dialogues are good and at times hilarious. Choreography in all the songs is brilliant. Editing by Marthand K. Venkatesh could have been better. Production values of the film are lavish.

Sukumar's direction is good and he makes sure there's a shock element in most scenes. The twists in the story come at the right places and most of them are well handled.

The Verdict

The first half is is not gripping. Aarya 2's greatest asset is the riveting second half. If the intelligence and humour in the second half make it enjoyable, the drabness, tacky comedy and excruciating scenes make it unwatchable in the first half.

The last 15 minutes are stunning as the director reveals the real character of Aarya, thus relieving us of confusion. The plus points of the movie are creative scenes, songs (dances) and technical values.

On the flip side, psychotic orientation and confusion in hero's characterization doesn't get audiences involved in the movie intently. The run time of the movie is also more.

On the whole, avoid any comparisons and expectations from the earlier version, as the two are completely different.
